Experience overview
Join this programme by the British Geological Survey to discover a diverse range of career opportunities with a world-leading organisation. We’ll introduce you to the vital work of the British Geological Survey and show you how a career in geosciences can help address global issues and have a real impact to society. From protecting the environment to understanding our past and uncovering new resources, geologists play a crucial role in shaping a safer, more sustainable future.
What's included
Through this Virtual Work Experience, you will explore key concepts, industry insights, and practical skills that will prepare you for a future in the geosciences. Alongside the British Geological Survey, we’ll showcase the opportunities on offer through interactive content, quizzes, and fun activities to help build your understanding!
Start your journey with an overview of geology and an introduction to the British Geological Survey (BGS). Get to know BGS, its mission, core functions, and the pivotal role it plays in advancing geological research and applications. This module will delve into the various departments within BGS, highlighting their key projects and contributions to the field.
This module will explore the importance of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in geology, how it enriches the field, and the steps being taken by BGS and the wider geoscience community to create a welcoming atmosphere for all.
Understand the relationship between landscape features and geological research. Learn how these elements interact and shape our environment and why this knowledge is essential. This module will cover key terms and concepts, provide examples of different landscape types, and explain how geologists study and interpret these features to gain insights into Earth's history and processes.
Dive into the critical role geology plays in managing water resources, water quality, and sustainable water management practices. This module will discuss the importance of protecting water resources and highlight how geology can be the answer to innovative solutions for ensuring sustainable water use. In the second part of this module, you’ll discover the formation of fossils, the methods used to preserve and study them, and their significance in understanding Earth's history and biodiversity. This module will also cover BGS' collection of fossils and the ways in which these collections are utilised for research, education, and public engagement.
In this module, you’ll learn what hazards are, how they can interact and trigger one another, and how these events vary depending on where and when they occur. As the environment and population change, our exposure and vulnerability to hazards increase. You’ll explore key concepts like risk, vulnerability, exposure, and resilience, and understand how monitoring and managing multi-hazard events can help reduce their impact and build safer, more resilient communities. What’s more, you’ll learn about the different teams involved in multi-hazard monitoring at BGS.
Develop essential skills needed in any career, with a focus on those crucial to geosciences! This module will offer practical exercises and tips for improving your employability, covering topics like effective communication, problem-solving, and project management. You will also learn about the importance of continuous professional development and how to seek out opportunities for growth
